is a material made up of polymer plastic and PVC...
Polyvinyl chloride or PVC is a
widely used plastic. PVC is one of the most valuable
products produced by the chemical industry. More than 50% of the PVC
produced worldwide is for construction, being one of the cheapest and
easiest building material to assemble. Today, PVC has replaced many
traditional building materials like wood, and concrete. In view of all
the benefits that PVC offers as a building material, environmental and
human health concerns have been raised about PVC.
Polyvinyl chloride was accidentally discovered twice in the 19th
century, however
it wasn't until 1926, when B.F. Goodrich developed a way to soften the
PVC, making it flexible by blending it with additives. PVC is made from
monomers, vinyl chloride and is a hard plastic until plasticizers, such
as phthalates, are added.
Today, PVC is used in vinyl siding, window profiles, gramophone records,
plumbing
piping, conduit fixtures, and beanbags. PVC in its softer form is used
for clothing,
vinyl upholstery, flooring, roofing membranes, electrical cables, toys,
and several
hundred different other items.
