PVC shrink wrap applications
PVC film continues to be used in some applications, however, as it the
easiest of any film to seal and shrink in spite of its strength and
storage issues. Its sealing temperature is close to its degradation
temperature. Degradation by-products include very small quantities of
hydrogen chloride (HCL) gas and carbon deposits on the sealer.
Shrink wrap is used for two applications: transit
and display
A total wrap is used for mainstream display applications. This means
that the sealer must create a two-dimensional bag around the product.
The product and this bag are then sent through a heat tunnel to achieve
shrinkage. This is done by using an L-sealer and folded film. The
product is placed between the two layers of film and put into the sealer
manually. The seal is made and the pack is then placed on the tunnel
conveyor. This continuous process produces an element of scrap film.
Manual vs.
Automatic Sealers
The use of a manual sealer and tunnel has decreased significantly and
been replaced by the use of a combined seal and shrink machine, commonly
referred to as a chamber. These machines have a small footprint and
usually operate from a single phase. The sealer head has a plastic
enclosure and heat is stored within the unit to enable a combined seal
and shrink operation.
Shrink Wrap Bags
Shrink-wrap bags are more efficient to use for small products. You only
need to put the object in the bag, heat the bag, and ship the item. Bags
come in a range of sizes, starting at 4" x 6" for audiocassettes or
batteries to 18" by 24" for reams of paper.

You can buy a straight-bar sealer or an L-bar sealer. Tabletop models
should include a durable sealing pad. Look for a portable system that
can accommodate different sizes and types of film and heat up quickly.
When shrink wrapping artwork or photographs, use acid-free,
archival-quality shrink-wrap film. Not all acid-free films are of
archival quality. Do not store art in shrink wrap for long periods of
time.
