Most
customers ordering stretch wrap call it “shrink wrap.” If people who use
the product every day call it by the wrong name, what hope is there for
those who don’t use it regularly to know what it is? For that matter,
who cares? You should, if you want to be sure that you get the material
that is right for your application.
Just about every industrial, commercial, and distribution company uses
these products. You don’t want to order a product that won't work for
your application. If you have to reorder at the last minute, your
shipment can be delayed, which will lower your customer service
satisfaction. Stretch wrap and shrink wrap are two very different
products and they are used for very different applications. Shrink-wrap
film is made from polyolefin or PVC plastic, while stretch wrap is made
from polyethylene plastic.
Shrink wrap is most often used to protect a single product, such as the
plastic over toys, boxes of perfume, or CD covers. Shrink wrap’s tight
seal is achieved through a heating process. The product is wrapped and
then heated with a hairdryer-like tool or sent through a heat tunnel.
Shrink wrap is also also used to bundle products together, such as a
case of soda. Shrink wrap may sometimes be used for palletizing,
although stretch wrap is more commonly used for this application.
Stretch wrap is used to hold boxes on a pallet for transport. It is
pulled around the load and stretched. The plastic has a memory, or
elastic-band effect, and wants to return to its original size, which
holds the load tight. Stretch wrap comes in 12", 15", and 18" sizes for
hand wrapping and in 20" to 60" sizes for machine applications. It is
available in most even-numbered sizes from 4" to 20" and is generally
center folded, which means that the film is folded over to form two
layers. The product is inserted between the two layers and sealed on
three sides, then heat shrunk. For more information on these products,
