Industrial
shipping companies and mail services rely on shrink-wrap systems to help
organize, protect, and package their goods for transport.
Shrink wrap is similar to the plastics used in kitchens to keep food
fresh. Shrink wrap films are typically made from PVC or polyolefin and
cannot be used to wrap food. They are thicker, more durable, and harder
to tear or puncture. Polyolefin films have higher clarity than PVC
films. Shrink-wrap films of both types are wrapped around the product
and then heated, which shrinks the film so that it conforms to the shape
of the object. This seals out air and protects the object from dirt,
moisture, and the hazards of transport.
Shrink-wrap bags are more efficient to use for small products. You only
need to put the object in the bag, heat the bag, and ship the item. Bags
come in a range of sizes, starting at 4" x 6" for audiocassettes or
batteries to 18" by 24" for reams of paper.
CDs, videocassettes, jewelry boxes, DVDs, photographs, frames, and
mailers are examples of items that can be easily shipped using
shrink-wrap bags. Clear shrink-wrap bags are commonly used on gift or
fruit baskets. The bags not only keep the gifts clean, fresh, and well
organized, but also make them look professionally packaged.
A carton containing 500 small bags costs about $20. A carton of large
bags may cost as much as $150. This puts the cost range between 4 and 28
cents for each bag, depending on its size. You can purchase bags online
in bulk at good prices.
